Detroit ‘67 auditions
Firehouse Theatre invites you to Auditions for the RVA Premiere of Detroit ‘67 by Dominique Morisseau, directed by Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates.
Set to the sweet sounds of Motown, during the race riots that ravaged Detroit in 1967, family bonds are tested by the allure of forbidden love and a desire to stake a claim to the American dream.

AUDITIONS: Sunday, September 15th from 4:00-9:00 pm.
CALLBACKS (invitation only): Sunday, September 22nd from 6:00-10:00pm.

SEEKING:
Firehouse is seeking AEA (Equity) and non-Equity actors. Equity actors will be on an AEA Special Appearance Tier Two Contract. All non-Equity Mainstage performers will be paid between $1,400 - $2,100 per contract. commensurate with the size of the role and experience. Out-of-town actors are welcome to audition.
Firehouse seeks a diverse roster of collaborative, hardworking, kind, inspired, and inspiring actors, who are ready to support one another and invest in the overall success of the projects and the organization. Firehouse supports playwrights and directors in their visions for both culturally-appropriate and non-traditional casting.
Character Breakdown:
CHELLE (Michelle), Black woman, late 30’s, strong, steadfast, firm and not easily impressed. (This role is cast. Seeking understudy.)
LANK (Langston), Black man, early 30’s, cool, loving, and charismatic. A dreamer. Has a special effect on women, but not a womanizer. Chelle’s younger brother.
BUNNY (Bonita), Black woman, mid-late thirties, fun, spunky, sexy and joyful. A friend and sometimes lover… never lets nothin’ get her down.
SLY (Sylvester), Black man, late 30’s, hip, slick and sweet talking. An honest hustler and numbers man. Fiercely loyal. Lank’s best buddy.
CAROLINE, White woman, late 20’s/early 30’s, beautiful, quiet strength, troubled, soft and mysterious. A world of danger behind her eyes.
WHAT TO PREPARE:
Please prepare a 2-3 minute contemporary monologue and have a contrasting monologue ready in case the director would like to see more.
HOW TO SCHEDULE AN AUDITION:

PRODUCTION DATES:
Rehearsals begin on/around February 10th, 2025.
Performances run March 12th through March 30th, 2025.
Rehearsals are weekday evenings and weekends. Performances are typically Thursday through Saturday evenings, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday.
Education and Training
FIREHOUSE LADDER APPRENTICESHIP
Firehouse Theatre is assembling a team of highly motivated and collaborative individuals who are interested in joining our Firehouse Ladder Program. Apprentices have opportunities to learn and work across production, performance, and management based on each participant's interests and Firehouse's production needs.
Expectations and schedule will be agreed on before beginning the program. Work hours are flexible and based on the needs of production, but expected to fall within 10-20 hours per week, for a period of at least one month. The Ladder Program is an unpaid educational opportunity. Apprentices must arrange and cover their own housing and travel expenses, as well as any college credit that may be available.

VCU FEDERAL WORK STUDY PARTNERSHIP
Current and Incoming VCU students may apply to join the VCU Work study program, which partners students with Firehouse Staff to receive a financial aid based award, in exchange for job experience in a working professional theatre.
All levels of experience are encouraged to apply. Eligibility is based on Federal Financial Aid awards, and VCU award selection processes. All Applicants must apply through Handshake Job Boards. PRODUCTION RESEARCH INTERNSHIP
In the 2023-24 season, Firehouse Theatre is piloting a partnership with VCU’s Department of Sociology to establish a Production Research Internship. Interns will research the social political landscape of the play, providing directors, designers, and actors the necessary context to bring the play to its most authentic realization.
